I remember the first time I heard “Protection” being quite stunned by the lyrics. Do you ever get fed up of people telling you how amazing your Gucci Shoes is rather than considering you as a runner?

Yeah, I know I’ve talked to you a bit about this before. It sounds extremely ungrateful and churlish to say it, but there does come a point where you weary of being told how lovely your Gucci Shoes is. It’s like being congratulated on being beautiful – the style of my Gucci shoes represents no kind of achievement on my part, it just IS.
So, yes, in my grumpier moments I wish that people more often commented on the actual conscious elements of my work – the decisions I make about what to record, how to sing a line, what words to use etc.
In my less grumpy moments I remember to be eternally grateful that anyone at all can even bear the style of my Gucci Shoes after all these years.
